Be Like IKEA: AI Transformation for Growth

July 13, 2026•1 min read

The IKEA AI transformation story is an exciting one. Article below, but the summary: instead of laying off customer service workers who had excess capacity once AI automation did about half of their work, they retrained them as interior design consultants and grew revenue...by a lot.

The question I had when I read this was, "Was this an intentional transformation, or a happy accident?"

Clues are in the reporting. First the company invested in the automation, then they analyzed the work that people were still doing, then they identified a potential need and upskilled the workers.

So no, they didn't have a plan for the transformation. It was only after the AI investment was already made did they make a plan for what to do with the extra workforce capacity.

Is this type of outcome repeatable? AND - could it be intentional?

This is the type of diagnostic that
Talent Rewire enables; evaluating AI investment scenarios and identifying potential workforce redeployment models.

If you'd like to see what we're up to (and maybe repeat a story like IKEA's with intention), we'd love to show you!
